The Secretary of State announced on 25 March 2026 that the government intends to implement Option 1A, subject to Parliamentary approval.
The proposal creates North Hampshire, Mid Hampshire, South West Hampshire and South East Hampshire councils. The existing Isle of Wight Council remains a separate unitary authority.
Option 1A also moves eleven parish areas across existing district boundaries. Current councils remain responsible for services during the transition. Elections to shadow unitary councils are expected in May 2027, with the new councils planned to take responsibility on 1 April 2028.
